Please also check for limitations (eg. surnames A-K or L-Z only) and if classes start at a later date. Courses may be size restricted. If the course is full, please choose another option.

How to find lecture rooms
Classrooms at Europa-Universität Flensburg are located in different buildings. Not all are situated on campus.
Rooms have names (building abbreviations) with numbers (123: 1 = first floor, 23 = room number)
Following buildings are located on campus (see "map of campus" below):
Oslo (OSL), Helsinki (HEL), Dublin (DUB), Amsterdam (AMS), Riga (RIG), Trondheim (Tro)
Madrid (MAD) is located off campus near the Flensburg train station at Munketoft 3b.
Lecturers usually hand out course syllabi in their first sessions.

Guidelines for Academic Writing
The European Studies lecturers, students and programme administration of the EUF agreed on the following academic writing guidelines. The guide provides information on all formal and academic standards. Students are supposed to acquire the contents independently. Written assignments are graded under the expectation that students took note of the guidelines and applied them correspondingly.

Internships & Summer Schools
Information on Internships
If you fulfil the following requirements, your internship can be accepted as an elective course:
- the internship has to be related to the study programme
- you have talked about doing the internship with the Coordinator of M.A. EUS before the start of the internship
- it was carried out after the beginning of your master studies in EUS
- it was a full-time internship of at least four weeks
- your participation can be confirmed by a reference letter or certificate
- after completing your internship you have to write a report of 7-10 pages which will be graded by the head of studies.
Your internship is worth 5 ECTS. Since it is graded on the basis of passed/failed the grade cannot be considered for your final average grade on your diploma (which indicates your overall performance in the master). Acknowledgement of your internship is voluntary, you have to decide yourself whether you prefer to take an elective course which is graded within the regular grading system and will affect your final average grade or not.
Information on Summer Schools
If you fulfil the following requirements, your participation in a summer school can be accepted as an elective Course in your third semester:
- the content of the summer school demonstrably fits to the study programme in European Studies at Europa-Universität Flensburg
- the courses taken are evidently on a master level
- you have talked about doing the summer school with the Coordinator of M.A. EUS before the start of the internship
Independent of how many credits the course is worth in total according to the university hosting the summer school, a maximum of 5 ECTS will be accredited for it. The summer school counts as part of the 15 CP in the third semester reserved for electives. Since it is graded on the basis of passed/failed the grade cannot be considered for your final average grade on your diploma (which indicates your overall performance in the master). Information about the Master Thesis
On this page you will find the relevant information about writing your master thesis. Questions like "When and how to register?" or "What is the 4th semester reserved for?" will find their answers in the sections below.

On October 1st, 2014 the examination
The minimum time for processing a thesis (from registration to handing-in) may now not undercut ½ of the total allotted time.
|1st supervisor: Any lecturer (minimum: PhD degree) of the University of Flensburg, or a lecturer that has taught a course for EUS of the SDU in Sonderburg.|
2nd supervisor: Any lecturer of the MA European Studies programme (including external lecturers).
You have to be registered as a student at Europa-Universität Flensburg until the day of your last examination, which is the oral defence of the Master's thesis. This means that you have to re-matriculate as a student also when writing your Master's thesis. Not re-matriculating will lead to your removal from the register of students. That means that you may not be able to finish your studies.
Following thePart II, you have to add a declaration to your Master's thesis which states that you wrote the thesis yourself and only used the sources listed in it. You can use the example that we provide on this web site on the page ("Anti-Plagiarism Declaration"). Do not forget to fill it in and sign it!
4th Semester - Master Colloquium
Master Colloquium (5 SWS = 75 hours)
Participation in the master colloquium is mandatory.
Total work load of 75 hours is divided in 30 contact hours (seminar) + 45 hours self-study (home assignments). The 30 contact hours refer to monthly meetings in March, April, May and June.
Several different groups which will run in parallel will be offered, focusing on:
- Time management skills
- Refreshing research and writing skills
- Refreshing presentations skills, giving feedback and evaluating
- Presentation of your research
- Joint poster presentation session (together)
Assignments to be completed during the fourth semester in the framework of the Colloquium:
- Until April Meeting: Hand-in of project plan, including a detailed time table, description of planned project, structure of the thesis, open questions;
- Until May Meeting: Hand-in of Literature review, reflecting the state of the art in your field of research. Identify gaps in literature. Presentation of your project, in particular your research question and how you seek to answer it (approach it);
- June Meeting: Joint Poster Presentation.
To pass the MA Colloquium, you have to:
- Attend it 4 times
- Hand in a project plan
- Hand in a literature review
- Hold an individual presentation
- Do a poster presentation

Master Thesis - For students admitted before winter semester 2012/2013
You must be registered as a student at Europa-Universität Flensburg until the day of your last examination, which is the oral defence of the Master's thesis. This means that you have to re-register as a student also when writing your Master's thesis.
The minimum time for processing a thesis (from registration to handing-in) may not undercut ½ of the total allotted time. This is regardless of which PO (rules and regulations) is valid for you.
Should you want to submit your thesis before the official date given in your confirmation from the examination office, please be advised that this is not possible before a minimum of 3 months from date of registration have passed.
Very important: Following the "European studies" examination regulation (§18 PO "European Studies" no. 8), you must add a declaration to your Master's thesis which states that you wrote the thesis yourself and only used the sources listed in it. You can use the example that we provide on this website on thepage ("Anti-Plagiarism Declaration"). Do not forget to fill it in and sign it!
Application Master's Thesis
For a Master's thesis at the EUF, you need two supervisors. They may be professors or research assistants or other lecturers. The only requirement is that one of the supervisors - either the first or the second one - has to be a professor. Both supervisors need to agree on the supervision and the title and sign the application form (available on
Before you start writing your master's thesis in either case, you have to apply for it by filling in the application form and handing it in at the examination office. After finishing your application you have six months to write your thesis. For the application you need to prove that you achieved an amount of 90 CP during your studies. If you intend to start writing your master's thesis before having achieved the necessary 90 CP, you have to send a request to the examination board an receive their approval.

Rules & Regulations 2012
The Rules & Regulations 2012 are valid for all students admitted for or after Winter Semester 2012/2013.
The (old) Rules & Regulations 2007 apply only to students admitted until and including Winter Semester 2011/2012. Please scroll to bottom of page to access the old examination rules and relevant content (marked "Rules&Regulations 2007"). The Rules&Regulations 2007 will become invalid once the next reaccreditation process is finalized.
During the third semester, students will need to choose elective courses. The required number of credits which will need to be earned through taking elective courses is 15 CP.
The elective courses center around three major topics
- External Relations of the EU
- Concepts of Europe and Politics of the EU
- European Business Economics
In the framework of the partnership agreement with the University of Souther Denmark, students enrolled in EUS programme before winter term 2017/2018 may also choose to take elective courses in Denmark. The total credits earned in Denmark may not exceed 20 CP.

The "Rules and Regulations on Grading and Examinations of Europa-Universität Flensburg for the European Studies Master's Programme" are the legal framework of the Master's programme (German: "Prüfungsordnung der Universität Flensburg für den Masterstudiengang 'European Studies'").

Exams and Term Papers
Requirements for exams and term papers
- Please make sure that you are registered for the exam! The appropriate dates for registration can be found on the.
- Please note: For your own safety be sure to print out the pdf of your registered exams list as this will prevent any problems arising.
- Please be present at least 15 minutes before the exam begins
- It is vital that you bring your student ID with matriculation number with you as you will need this to sign into the exam.
- With every term paper, the "Anti-Plagiarism Declaration", available, has to be added, filled in and signed!
- For all other matters, please follow the instructions given by your lecturer
Additional requirements for exams and assignments taken at the SDU:
- For Danish exams (written/oral) you need your Danish SDU student card and you have to have it with you on the exam's day.
- The following has to be noted on every page: Surname, name, name of the module, and name of the course.
Absence, Withdrawal, Cheating, Rule Infringements:
§ 9 Absence, Withdrawal, Cheating, Rule Infringements
An examination is graded as "fail" if the candidate fails to appear for an examination without appropriate reasons or withdraws from the examination after it has begun without proper explanation. The same is true if a written examination is not completed within the period foreseen for its completion.
The reasons for failure to appear, failed submission, or withdrawal must be presented to the examination committee immediately in written form and made plausible. In case of illness, a medical certificate might be required. If the explanation is accepted, a new date is planned. In such a case, the already completed exam results are to be included in the final grade.
If the candidate attempts to influence the result of an exam by cheating or using inadmissible aids, the relevant examination will be graded as "insufficient." A serious case of cheating is any form of plagiarism, in particular Internet plagiarism. If a case of plagiarism is established by the examination committee, the candidate can be excluded from taking part in any further examinations in the European Studies program." Repeating an exam:
§ 11 Repetition
Examinations that have not been passed can be repeated once, and in justified cases a second time with the permission of the examination committee." (§ 11 PO "European Studies" no.1 para.1)
This means that for a third attempt you have to send a request to the Examination Board (Examination Committee) complying with the regulations in § 11 PO "European Studies" no.1 para.1. A third attempt is considered an exception, not a normal case.

ECMI: The European Minority Rights and Minority Protection Regime
K. H. Stumpf: Political ecology and sustainability
Societies in Europe face a number of ecological, economic and social challenges, questioning their sustainability. The seminar addresses some of the most pressing current ecological crises, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, and discusses different approaches of analysing their societal and economic causes. Different political responses, both bottom up and top down, are discussed. These include environmental and sustainability policies of the European Union, the idea of a "Green Economy", as well as initiatives from below such as the Transition Towns movement or the Degrowth movement.
For a constructive seminar, students are expected to read the preparatory texts, participate actively and contribute to the facilitation of sessions. The assessment for this course takes the form of a term paper.
W. Wodarg: Council of Europe
Seminar Council of Europe
The seminar on the Council of Europe gives the opportunity to experience, how the core values of a bigger Europe are shaped and safeguarded by its democratic bodies.
We shall discuss principles, structures and procedures of this democratic motor for building a bigger and sustainable Europe based on the principles of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Students will get a training as parliamentarians and will be encouraged to develop ideas for a better Europe and learn how to fight for them in a parliamentary assembly.
Finally we shall visit the national parliament in Berlin and have some exchanges with its representatives on European politics.

S. Wulk: The EU: External Relations
In this course we will look at the EU’s external relations from an historical as well as contemporary perspective. We will look at the evolution of the EU’s foreign policy and then delve into its current outlook, dimensions and scope. Further, we will look at the academic debate surrounding the topic of the EU’s global actorness and discuss in how far the EU can be considered a global power.
